The Beyond the Mat app on a phone

Beyond the Mat turns BJJ technique into short daily lessons you can actually see. Every move is built in 3D, so you can rotate it, look underneath it, and see straight through it. Then a few questions, to check it landed. Built for adult beginners and for kids who train at a club, in English, French and Dutch.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    One lesson a day

Five minutes, one idea, and a streak you will not want to break.

  2. Step 2

    See it from every angle

The grip from the side, from behind, from underneath. And straight through it, when that is what you need.

  3. Step 3

    Check it landed

A few questions after the lesson, before you try it in class.

  4. Step 4

See how far you have come

Every lesson you have finished, in one place. Progress you can point at.

What is inside

  • 3D and AR lessons, every day

Walk around a technique on your phone. No headset, no extra kit.

  • Streaks, quizzes and rewards

The reason you open it on a Tuesday when you are tired.

  • It starts where you are

White belt from day one, or further along. The app works out your level and teaches at it.

  • Free club tools for coaches

Set up your club, see how your members are getting on. No charge.

    See what clubs get

Meet your in-app coaches

Six of them. Each one owns a part of the game.

For parents

Screen time that helps their training

Five to ten minutes a day, on the technique their club is already teaching. You can see what they have worked on, and none of it replaces mat time.

  • A set order to work through, not a video library to get lost in.
  • Progress you can both see, week by week.
  • Built with coaches, to sit alongside club classes.

Questions

What is Beyond the Mat?

A learning app for Brazilian jiu-jitsu. One short lesson a day, built in 3D so you can turn it around and look straight through it, followed by a few questions to check it landed.

When does it launch, and where?

autumn 2026, on iOS and Android, in English, French and Dutch. Join the waiting list and we will email you when it opens in your language.

What does it cost?

Free to download, and the core lessons stay free. There is an optional subscription at €2.99 a month if you want the rest.

Do I need special hardware for AR?

No. A phone is enough. The 3D runs on screen, and AR uses the camera you already have.

Is it a replacement for my coach?

No. Your coach teaches you the technique. We help you hold on to it between sessions, so you turn up to the next class ready to build on it instead of relearning it.

How does it work for kids?

The same lessons in a set order, five to ten minutes a day, at the level the app works out for them. Parents can see what their child has worked on. It works best alongside the classes their club already runs.

Which languages does it support?

English, French and Dutch from day one. This site is in the same three.

How do clubs join?

Club tools are free for coaches. Choose "A coach or club owner" when you join the waiting list and we will get in touch before launch. There is more on the coaches page.
