What Beyond the Mat is, and what it is not

Beyond the Mat

Beyond the Mat is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu learning app for beginners. It is on the App Store and on Google Play, and the lessons are free.

That is the short version. This post is the long one, written for anyone who has seen the name on Instagram or heard it at their club and wants to know what they would actually be downloading. It is also written for the honest sceptic who suspects an app cannot teach BJJ. They are right, and we will get to that.

The problem it is built for

If you have trained for less than two years, you know the feeling. Your coach shows a technique from where they are standing. It makes sense in the moment. Then you spar, someone puts you in that position, and from underneath none of it looks like what you saw. You push with your arms, get tired, get submitted, and go home unsure what went wrong.

Most beginners quit inside two years, and confusion is the reason more often than fitness or toughness. We wrote about why in our first post. Beyond the Mat exists to shorten the confused period.

What you get

One five-minute lesson a day. Each lesson takes one position or concept and walks you through it. Side control, mount, frames, what a guard pass actually is. Short enough to do on the bus.

Every move built in interactive 3D. This is the part that is different. The position is not a video. It is a 3D scene you can rotate with your finger and tilt to look underneath, even from under the mat, so you can see where the top person’s weight is sitting. If the angle your coach demonstrated from is not the one you need, pick another one.

One move, built a step at a time. Same position in both panels, from a different angle: it is a scene, not a clip.

Questions that check it landed. After you have looked at the position, the app asks you what to do next, or which limb matters, or how to break the grip. You can get it wrong. That is the point. A question you get wrong and then understand is worth more than a video you nodded through.

Six coaches inside the app. Not real people, 3D characters, each with a specialism. Victor is the Professor and covers how the whole system fits together. Dmitri handles structure under pressure, escapes and defence. Aisha does submission mechanics down to the detail. Nkosi covers balance, pressure and top control. Emma looks after your first weeks and what to expect from them. Sensei handles philosophy, history and why any of it matters. They talk you through the lessons and react when you get things right.

Your own avatar. You build the version of you that trains: hair, face, gi colour, belt, and a flag patch for your country. It is a small thing that makes the app feel like yours.

Progress you can see. Levels, stars and a journey map, so a week of training shows up as something rather than nothing. Beginners quit when progress is invisible. We made it visible.

Three languages. English, French and Dutch for now. With many more following soon.

What it costs

Free to download and the lessons are free. There is an optional subscription at 2.99 euro or 2.99 pounds a month that removes the ads and unlocks Unlimited Flow. You do not need it to learn BJJ with the app. You need it if you want more than the daily lesson and no ads.

We are a small team in Belgium and the subscription is how the free tier stays free. We would rather say that plainly than hide it.

What it is not

It is not a replacement for your club. You cannot learn to survive under a heavier person from a screen, and we would not want you to try. Beyond the Mat is for the time between classes: understanding the position before Tuesday so the coach can coach instead of re-explaining frames.

It is not an instructional library. There are no hour-long breakdowns and no black belt talking to camera for forty minutes. If you want depth on a specific system, an instructional is still the right purchase. If you want to stop being lost in sparring, that is us.

The format instead of the forty minute breakdown: one question, then one line of coaching.

It is not augmented reality yet. Every lesson is in 3D on your screen. AR is on the roadmap, and when it arrives we will say so.

It is not for experienced grapplers. If you are a purple belt, you are past the confusion the app solves. Send it to the white belt in your class who keeps asking what to do from bottom.

For coaches and club owners

There is a second half to this, arriving in 2027: free club tools for coaches. Set up your club, invite your members, and see what they worked on between classes. If you run a club, choose “A coach or club owner” on the waiting list at beyondthemat.app and we will be in touch before it opens. It will stay free for coaches.

For parents

If your child trains, the app shows you what they are learning and lets them keep going between classes. There is a section for you on the website. The short version: it is a companion to their club, not a replacement, and you can see their progress rather than guessing from the side of the mat.

Where to get it

Search Beyond the Mat on the App Store or on Google Play, or go to beyondthemat.app and tap Get the app. Same lessons on both.

Questions we have not answered here are probably on the FAQ. If not, ask us.

Questions people ask

Is Beyond the Mat free?

Yes. It is free to download on the App Store and on Google Play, and the lessons are free. There is an optional subscription at 2.99 euro or 2.99 pounds a month that removes the ads and unlocks Unlimited Flow. You never need it to learn.

Is Beyond the Mat available on iPhone?

Yes. It is on the App Store for iPhone and on Google Play for Android, with the same lessons on both. Search Beyond the Mat in either store, or go to beyondthemat.app and tap Get the app.

Does Beyond the Mat use AR?

No. Every lesson is built in interactive 3D, so you can rotate a position and look underneath it on your phone screen. Augmented reality is on our roadmap but it is not in the app today.

Can Beyond the Mat replace going to a BJJ class?

No, and it is not trying to. It is built to make what your coach showed you stick between classes. You still need a mat, a partner and a coach.

Which languages does the app support?

English, French and Dutch, from day one.
